Slow Art Summer Retreat: Cultivating the ground of meditation, creative practice, and sustainable living.

The first annual Slow Art Summer Retreat is for 10 practicing artists of various mediums who are curious about the play between mindfulness and their work. This is a time and place to engage the creative process with meditative practice. We invite you to return to the still point where creativity arises.

The retreat will be held on a 200 year-old farm nestled on 209 acres of field and forest in the lush hills of Barnet, Vermont. The property includes a newly-renovated main house, a cabin, and a barn and other outbuildings for shared bedrooms and generous studio space. The expansive land that supports the farm may also be useful for art practice. Artists should provide their own supplies.

We will be practicing sitting meditation each morning, eating meals together, and practicing our art in our own studios and surrounding terrain. Guided meditation and contemplation exercises, discussions on topics related to contemplative art, cheese-making, music, painting excursions, canoeing and more (or less!).. all possible as the retreat unfolds. Our activity will be richer if we understand stillness.

We look forward to growing some of our food in our own garden, and buying the rest from local growers and suppliers whenever possible. Most of our meals will be prepared by our own cook, and some we will prepare ourselves. Conscientious eating isn't only about feeding ourselves, but about being part of a whole living system.. and local food is delicious!

Laura Noble is an artist and assistant teacher of Shambhala Art. A qualified meditation instructor will be available to give meditation instruction.
Slow Art Summer Retreat is not an official Shambhala Art program, but it has been informed by principles from Shambhala Art, among other spiritual and art practices. This may be a good supplement for an artist already on a spiritual path to practice their contemplative practice in a rich creative environment, or for the artist simply curious about meditation. We will provide instruction in sitting meditation for anyone who wants it. Artists who are not very familiar with meditation may benefit by reading a book like Turning The Mind Into An Ally, by Sakyong Mipham.

This is an opportunity to practice with a group of artists in an intimate though spacious setting. The texture of the experience will be largely determined by the participants; this is an investigation into collaborative interdependence, and into having creative fun. Please consider joining us!

Tuition, including room and meals, will be $750 for the three weeks, or $300 per week. Please inquire if you would like to attend, but could only afford a lower price. Consider that we have tried to keep the cost as low as possible.
